Vaginal rejuvenation is the broad term we use to describe the treatment of vaginal atrophy, laxity, incontinence, or many of the other issues we get down there. Dr Gina Messiha, Director and Founder of Ocean Cosmetics in WA, and trained in obstetric and gynaecology for 6 years prior to starting her general practice, feels it is her mission to empower women to age the way they wish without judgement. We love this, and also love the many patients who are singing her praises when it comes to her results with ThermiVa for vaginal rejuvenation. We had a chat with Dr Messiha about empowering women and the evolution of vaginal rejuvenation.
PSH: Dr Messiha, what led you to specialise in women’s health?
Dr Messiha: Helping women to feel and look their best has always been my first interest. With my background in obstetrics and gynecology before starting my general practice and cosmetics, I always had an interest in women’s health. When laser was first introduced to help women with vaginal dryness we all got very excited. It meant we could help the so many women who suffer during menopause with a dry vagina, irritation and subsequently painful sex.
PSH: Tell us about how you first discovered the ThermiVa?
Dr Messiha: CO2 laser was the first technology introduced in the vaginal rejuvenation field. Then we had Erbium laser, which was non ablative and relied on bulk heating so it can rejuvenate and tighten at the same time. It meant we could help not only dry vagina but also help with vaginal prolapse and stress incontinence. I had been doing the erbium vaginal rejuvenation for over 2 years the problem with laser (more the CO2 than Erbium) is as you try to treat the vaginal canal and the entity (introitus) the patient is unable to tolerate the procedure.
I had heard of ThermiVa and realised very quickly that I was able to not only treat the vaginal canal, but do extra passes for the introitus, and then do all the external areas including the labia majora, minora, periurethral, and clitoral hood PAIN FREE!!
PSH: So tell us in patient terms, what the ThermiVa actually treats?
DR Messiha: There are generally three main things we have patients asking to treat:
1/ Dry vagina – irritation and painful sex.
2/ Stress incontinence – the bladder neck drop happens in the lower part of the vagina.
3/ Sexual gratification and orgasm issues – the “G spot’ is in the lower anterior vagina.
Patients are being pleasantly surprised after their ThermiVa treatment that not only is their initial issue treated, but they have other benefits as well. It is quite a revolution in improving the outside appearance as well. As in ‘tidy things up‘. I call it non surgical labiaplasty!
The results I saw outside was an objective difference which no doubt reflected the difference happening inside as reported by my patients. I bought this machine thinking it will not replace my laser for vaginal laxity, vaginal dryness, incontinence, increased sexual gratification but it does all of that and more!
With over 6 years obstetrics and gynaecology, 15 years in general practice, specialising in women and mental health 10 years in cosmetics and anti aging medicine with experience in energy based devices, this technology is the way to the future in skin and vaginal rejuvenation. Almost pain free with no down time, it achieves so much more when compared with just resurfacing with other lasers.
