Dermaplaning Perth

Dermaplaning, or face shaving, as it’s otherwise known, is a safe and non-invasive treatment.

Dermaplaning, or face shaving, as it’s otherwise known, is a safe and non-invasive treatment that uses a surgical blade to remove hair and dead skin cells from the face.

Performed by a highly trained dermal therapist at our Perth clinic, dermaplaning is a safe alternative to waxing, IPL or laser hair removal to eliminate peach fuzz and vellus hair across your face.

Beyond hair removal, dermaplaning has other benefits, including giving your skin a thorough exfoliation for a smoother complexion and triggering the cell regeneration process for a healthier, brighter look and feel. Individuals with acne scarring, dull or dry skin, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles may find dermaplaning a highly effective treatment.

After the treatment, besides super soft and plump skin, you will notice that skincare products will absorb better into your skin, makeup will have a smooth, non-cakey appearance, and your skin will have a “lit from within” glow.

Risks and complications

Dermaplaning is a technique with minimal risk. In the hours following the procedure, you may experience minor redness on your face as a side effect, but this should subside. A day or two after your dermaplaning procedure, you may also experience whiteheads developing on your skin.

Infection and scarring are uncommon risks of dermaplaning, but they can occur. You may need a steroid injection administered into the scar tissue if you experience scarring after your dermaplaning to lessen the scar tissue. An additional potential complication is patchy skin pigmentation in the treated area, which may fade or vanish with time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the treatment involve?

Dermaplaning uses a professional surgical blade at a 45-degree angle designed to remove peach fuzz/vellus hair from the top layer of the skin. This blade removes dead skin cells on the superficial epidermal layer, along with blackheads and congestion. We finish the treatment with a fruit enzyme mask to exfoliate excess dead skin in the area. Your complexion is left filled with antioxidants and a smooth, glowing appearance.

Is dermaplaning good for the skin?

Your skin is subjected to harsh environmental pollutants, irritants, and sun damage daily. This might make your skin’s top layer appear dull and make you appear older. When you dermaplane, those damaged skin cells are removed, revealing fresher skin beneath. Shaving and dermaplaning both operate on the same fundamental principles. Using a sterile blade at a 45-degree angle and moving it carefully across your skin can remove dead skin cells, scar tissue, and other debris that may be causing skin concerns.

Will my hair grow back darker or thicker?

Your hair will not grow back darker or thicker. This treatment does not stimulate the hair follicle or cut it bluntly at the root.

How long does dermaplaning last?

The treatment can last three to six weeks, depending on the client’s skin and hormonal factors.

How do I prep my skin for dermaplaning?

It is advised to thoroughly prep your skin before the treatment to achieve the best possible outcomes. Examine your skin for any wounds or cuts. The skin must be in good condition and free of any injuries, as this could raise the possibility of infection. Before your dermaplaning treatment, you should avoid using exfoliants or other skincare products that could exacerbate skin sensitivity, such as acne retinoids.

If you have a tan, sunburn, active acne, a flare-up of rosacea, or an inflammatory skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis, you should postpone dermaplaning as it can worsen these conditions. Additionally, you should exercise caution when dermaplaning if you have a lot of deep acne scarring, as there may be a higher risk of skin nicking.

How often should you get dermaplaning?

Because dermaplaning is a highly exfoliating treatment, it is recommended to wait at least a month between consultations. At the same time, some patients with sensitive skin may wish to limit their treatments to once every few months. The precise timing will differ from person to person, so it is essential to have a treatment plan that accommodates regular treatments that suit your skin.

How is dermaplaning different from shaving?

Although dermaplaning and shaving your face appear quite similar, the critical distinction between the two is that dermaplaning, when done by a qualified professional, delivers a more comprehensive skin exfoliation. While convenient, shaving with a facial blade at home only really targets peach fuzz and facial hair.

Is there any downtime?

There is no amount of downtime needed if you feel comfortable. You may leave your appointment looking slightly flushed for an hour or two post-treatment. We prefer to leave your skin to breathe for at least 24 hours post-treatment, and wearing no makeup would be beneficial. You can resume daily activities as usual, but please ensure your skin is protected with SPF.

How long after dermaplaning can I wear makeup?

Patients should wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup. This will allow the skin to breathe and rest during this time, as your skin’s barrier will be much more vulnerable immediately following your dermaplaning treatment.
