Wrinkle Relaxers – What Are They and How Do They Work?

Finding a skin rejuvenation treatment that works for you is essential to achieving a glowing, youthful look that naturally suits your facial features.

At Ocean Cosmetics, we sit with you through a skin consultation during your first appointment. This is when we like to discuss your skin concerns and areas you’d like to target with your treatments. We personalise all of our treatments at Ocean Cosmetics, so this part is very important to us.

During these consultations, it’s common for us to receive a lot of questions about wrinkle relaxers and how they can be used effectively for skin rejuvenation. Hannah, our Cosmetic Nurse, has answered some of these questions for you.

How do wrinkle relaxers work?

Wrinkle Relaxers are used to stop the contraction of specific muscles. The wrinkle relaxers prevent the deepening of existing wrinkles, dynamic lines or from creating new ones.

The muscles movements are stopped by temporarily blocking the nerve signal to the brain, resulting in softening the face and preventing more lines from appearing.

What else can wrinkle relaxers be used for?

Wrinkle Relaxers are suitable for everyone. Often our younger patients will book in for this treatment to ‘prevent wrinkles’ from forming. If you have mature skin, it is often used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles for a refreshed and lifted look.

Most people don’t know that wrinkle relaxers can be used for a number of other things besides our faces.

  • Excessive sweating
  • Preventing headaches
  • Blepharospasms
  • To reduce a gummy smile
  • Chin dimpling
  • Jaw line slimming
  • Overactive bladder

My wrinkle relaxers have worn off, what now?

Wrinkle relaxers will naturally wear off and metabolise in the body. This happens as new nerve endings are developed that are not affected by the wrinkle relaxers. When your new nerve endings develop in your face, they attach to a muscle and fine lines will slowly reappear.

How long do wrinkle relaxers last?

The lasting duration of wrinkle relaxers can vary between people. Often, they can last between three to four months. If you are an active person who does a lot of exercises you may metabolise the wrinkle relaxers faster, causing them to wear off earlier than expected.

Are there any side effects of wrinkle relaxers?

As with every treatment, there are side effects and risks that come with it. We always ensure to chat with you about this during your consultation.

Most of the time, possible side effects for wrinkle relaxers are around the area of injection. This includes eyelid ptosis, bruising, redness, swelling, nausea and sometimes can include headaches.

Are you looking for an alternative to wrinkle relaxers?

At Ocean Cosmetics, we offer a wide range of treatments to reduce fine lines, firm and lift the skin. One of my favourite treatments would be The Vivace Experience, this is a great all-round treatment that can be used to target a lot of concerns at once.
