Melasma is a skin disorder that causes brown pigmentation to appear in patches. It occurs when cells under the skin (melanocytes) are stimulated to produce excess pigment (melanin). This can be caused by genetics, hormonal changes (it’s common during pregnancy), UV exposure, some cosmetics, and some pharmaceutical products. While treatment can improve melasma, it can reappear through recurring exposure to these triggers.
It may appear as a single patch or multiple patches, with three main patterns of distribution including the centrofacial pattern which is the most common. Treatments are tailored to the concern’s severity, and to prevent worsening of existing patches or the creation of new ones. The most appropriate treatment depends upon the contributing factors, and we’re committed to providing personalised treatment plans to help you manage this concern.
