Hyperpigmentation – What is it and Why do we have it?

Posted by Laine van Deventer on

Pigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns we treat here at Ocean Cosmetics. So we’ve taken a deeper looking into what exactly hyperpigmentation is, how it’s caused and how you can treat it.

Hyperpigmentation appears as darkened patches or spots on the skin that make the skin look uneven. It can occur for a range of different reasons – some preventable, some not. The most common cause of pigmentation is sun damage and UV overexposure. Hyperpigmentation can also occur naturally from Age, Genetics, and Birthmarks. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation is another type of hyperpigmentation. PIH is acquired pigmentation, caused by past injuries, acne scarring, burns, or other skin conditions. Hormones also play a role in pigmentation, and pregnancy and oral contraceptions have the ability to cause hyperpigmentation.

What does pigmentation look like?

  • Freckles
  • Sunspots, liver spots, or age spots (most common on the face, hands, and arms)
  • Melasma (can appear anywhere on the body)
  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

What causes it?

  • Birthmarks/Genetics
  • UV Radiation/Sun Damage. This is the most common cause of pigmentation.
  • Hormonal. This is seen in melasma, often caused by pregnancy or oral contraceptives
  • PIH is acquired pigmentation, caused by past injuries, acne scarring, burns, or other skin conditions.

Here are some of our top treatments to tackle hyperpigmentation:

Cosmelan peels are gentle on the skin but with intense results! Cosmelan is a professional depigmentation method that has an intensive corrective effect on skin hyperpigmentation whilst regulating the overproduction of melanin in the melanocytes, inhibiting, and controlling the appearance of new dark spots.

Results include removing dark spots,  sun spots, and hyperpigmentation. This treatment is effective in the treatment of melasma and chloasma! There is a significant amount of downtime that comes with this treatment, but the results speak for themselves. Check out these before and after shots of our beautiful cosmetic nurse Hannah, one month post Cosmelan.

Experience remarkable results in pigmented, thin, dehydrated skin thanks to Fraxel. All our laser procedures are completed by our qualified medical doctors, Dr. Gina & Dr. Jess.

Fraxel can help benefit your skin by reducing scarring, evening out skin tone, and repairing sun damage. Fraxel also softens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smooths refined skin, and hydrates and refreshes the skin.

BBL Photo Rejuvenation helps even out skin tones, promotes skin renewal, and fades scars, freckles, and sunspots. This treatment is very effective and relatively pain-free.

The light-based technology triggers the cell regeneration process, resulting in visible improvements from the very first treatment. Imagine what could be achieved in 2-3 treatments.
