Targeting Sun Damage and Pigmentation: The Impact of Non-Ablative Fractional Laser and Broadband Light Therapy

Posted by Laine van Deventer on

As you age the effects of sun damage and uneven pigmentation can appear, becoming more pronounced in your 40s. While this is a natural part of the ageing process, these concerns can be effectively treated using advanced technologies to achieve a refreshed appearance. As a premier cosmetic clinic, Ocean Cosmetics specialises in innovative treatments that can address sun damage and pigmentation with precision and care.

Today, let’s take a closer look at these concerns, the range of treatments we offer in the clinic including non-ablative fractional lasers and broadband light therapy, and the scientific studies supporting these technologies.

Understanding Sun Damage and Pigmentation

Sun Damage

Sun damage, also known as photoaging, occurs over time as your skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Activities such as regularly working or playing sport outdoors, spending time at the beach, and using tanning beds all contribute to UVA and UVB exposure. This results in premature ageing, manifesting as dark spots, uneven skin tone, texture changes, and fine lines and wrinkles. This UV exposure can also increase your risk of developing skin cancer. The best way to prevent further sun damage from occurring is to incorporate SPF 50+ sunscreen into your daily skincare routine, no matter what the weather.

Pigmentation

Pigmentation (also known as hyperpigmentation) occurs when melanin production increases, resulting in darker patches of skin. Factors that can cause uneven pigmentation to appear include excessive sun exposure, medication, hormonal changes, injuries or acne (post-inflammatory pigmentation), or medical conditions.

Like sun damage, pigmentation can be prevented by using proper sun protection including applying and reapplying sunscreen daily. While this is a common concern, identifying the cause is critical to determine the optimal treatment. Treatment Options

Interested in reducing the appearance of these concerns? At Ocean Cosmetics we’ve made it a priority to stay at the forefront of technology and techniques, and have a wide range of innovative treatments available. As part of this mission, we’re also passionate about regenerative aesthetics treatments which harness the body’s natural healing process to achieve your desired results.

One of the most effective treatments we offer for sun damage and pigmentation is non-ablative fractional laser therapy in the form of MOXI or Fraxel, which deliver precise energy to stimulate skin repair and regeneration. We can also create a treatment stack, combining one of these lasers with BBL Photo Rejuvenation to boost your results.

Let’s take a closer look at these treatments.

MOXI – This preventative laser treatment gently resurfaces the skin, resulting in micro injuries that facilitate cell regeneration and renewal. This is ideal to target sun damage, ageing, and uneven pigmentation, and provides improved tone, texture, and radiance. This treatment has little to no downtime.

Fraxel – Fraxel is ideal to target pigmentation resulting from sun damage, reduce scarring, and to soften wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, and fine lines. It stimulates new collagen, and promotes a smooth, even, hydrated, and refreshed complexion.

BBL Photo Rejuvenation – Unlike the above laser treatments, BBL Photo Rejuvenation uses light energy to gently heat the skin’s upper layers and stimulate the cell regeneration process. It’s ideal to fade pigmentation and scarring, and improve an uneven skin tone.

While this is one of our favourite combinations to address these concerns, we offer a range of other effective treatments including:

 Cosmelan Depigmentation Peel
 Revlite Q Switch
 Mesotherapy

Scientific Support for Non-Ablative Fractional Laser Treatments and Broadband Light Therapy

There are scientific studies surrounding these advanced treatments that have revealed additional benefits and powerful results.

Alongside treating sun damage and pigmentation, a study found that non-ablative fractional laser treatments can reduce the risk of developing subsequent non-melanoma skin cancers. This study was conducted with patients who had a history of facial non-melanoma skin cancers, split into two groups where one group received non-ablative fractional laser treatments.

In another study focusing on broadband light therapy, it was found that BBL Photo Rejuvenation treatments can effectively revitalise sun damaged and intrinsically aged skin. It doesn’t only change the outward appearance, but instead can support rejuvenation at a molecular level to support more youthful cell functions.
