GSM and Women’s Health

GSM and Women’s Health

Menopause is a condition that will affect nearly every woman at some point in her life. It’s a natural occurrence that is due to a woman’s ovaries running out of functioning eggs. As the body starts to go through the transition, there’s a number of symptoms that can occur such as hot flashes, chills, sleep problems, vaginal dryness as well as others.

Don’t suffer in silence, Dr Gina says.

“Getting close to 55 I’m facing lots of changes in my skin, body shape, fat distribution, ability to lose weight and other female related symptoms, all due to estrogen deficiency and general aging.

One of the menopause conditions us women suffer in silence with is GSM or Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause. This condition has an adverse impact on quality of life, social activity and sexual relationships. It is a chronic and progressive syndrome that is underdiagnosed and undertreated. Which means GSM will not go away and settle on its own. “We need help. SOS”

If you suffer from vaginal dryness, loss of lubrication, painful sex, vulvar burning, dryness, irritation or itching which might lead to lack of libido and sexual dysfunction of arousal and orgasm, GSM may be something to consider. Some women will also have urinary symptoms like recurrent urinary tract infections, urgency and urge incontinence, stress incontinence, which all might be related to GSM.

These symptoms might be related to:
• the lack of estrogen and subsequent negative effect on vaginal, urethral and pelvic floor tissues,
• lack of collagen and elastin hence reduced elasticity,
• reduced blood supply and thinning of the lining.

After full assessment and excluding any other pathology, you can consider:
• Non-hormonal therapies include personal lubricants,
• vaginal moisturisers and
• vaginal laser (long-term safety and efficacy have not been established according to RACGP)

But in my hands and according to some international experts they work really well. At Ocean Cosmetics we have Thermiva which non ablative radiofrequency, heating the vaginal tissue to 42 degree. Might sound scary, but trust me, it doesn’t hurt. You need 2-3 treatments for optimal results.

RF will stimulate new collagen and elastin, improve blood supply and nerve ending with overall improvement in elasticity, dryness.

You might ask, “Dr Gina have you had this treatment?”
Unfortunately not, as it is one treatment I cannot do on myself. And only myself and Dr Jess perform this treatment at Ocean Cosmetics. Whilst we’re doctors and it’s all in a day’s work, Dr Jess is not necessarily comfortable performing the procedure on me.

Hormonal therapies include vaginal oestriol cream or pessaries, vaginal oestradiol tablets, or systemic hormone therapy if other menopausal symptoms are experienced and if there are no contraindications, are effective treatments.”

So don’t suffer in silence any longer. There are ways to treat and manage GSM.
