You’ve had decades of life experience. All of your smiles, happiness, tears and everything in between have shaped who you are as a person on the inside and out. Puberty, pregnancy, stress, and menopause (whether you’ve gone through it or not) can all have a significant impact on your hormones, manifesting on your skin as fine lines, pigmentation, and volume loss.

When you’re in your fifties, cosmetic procedures shouldn’t be used to make you appear younger; instead, they should enhance your natural beauty and delay some of the telltale signs of a life well-lived.

Most common skin concerns for this age:

  • Fine lines
  • Sagging facial features
  • Wrinkles
  • Vaginal dryness and painful sex
  • Loss of skin volume and plumpness
  • Dry, dehydrated skin
  • Age and sun spots
  • Hyperpigmentation and melasma

Dr Jess says:

“It’s all about a combined approach in your 50s. For example, combining a resurfacing treatment with a tightening treatment will give you a better result altogether than either of those as a standalone treatment.”

5 Tips

To get that gorgeous glow!

five tips 50s img 50s - 8
  1. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. It may be hard to sleep soundly through the night, but your skin will thank you by going to bed early enough and getting your eight hours.
  2. Keep your skin hydrated. Avoid super hot showers, harsh soaps and anything that will dry your skin out too much. Purchase a hydrating night cream, and, as always, drink lots of water!
  3. Stay active and move your body! Maintaining an active lifestyle will have many benefits for your body, appearance and health now and in the long run. A walk in the morning or evening is a great place to start.
  4. Reduce your sugar intake. Too much sugar can lead to inflammation, resulting in a flow-on effect of wrinkles and skin sagging. Sugar can also cause conditions like acne and rosacea to flare up.
  5. Keep up that SPF habit; if you don’t have one, then now is an excellent time to start! Find a sunscreen that sits nicely under your makeup, and apply it to your hands and down your neck and décolletage, as these areas will show sun spots and damage more easily than others.
