What is Lightsheer hair removal?
Lumenis LightSheer Desire is one of the most effective laser hair removal treatments on the market today. It’s a high speed, permanent hair reduction treatment, something we all love using in winter to get ready for the summer months ahead!

This treatment uses a state-of-the-art diode laser with vacuum-assist technology, sounds fancy right? It can remove unwanted hair faster and more comfortably than other available methods, that’s why we love it so much at Ocean Cosmetics!

Is there a difference between the types of laser hair removal?
Unlike IPL, BBL or other lasers, the Lightsheer laser hair removal is a unique treatment. It features target dual wavelengths, allowing us to customise laser hair removal treatments for all skin types. Personalisation is key! This is the best way to get the results you’re after.

Lightsheer laser hair removal uses a single wavelength of light to target the hair follicle specifically. It’s precise and effective. Other treatments such as IPL will use various wavelengths of light and only some of these wavelengths will actually reach the hair follicle! If you’re getting IPL, you will need to receive more treatments to get the same results as using the Lightsheer laser hair removal treatment. Let’s be honest here, no one has time for that.

Can Lightsheer laser hair removal be customised for my skin?
Yes! Our practitioner will use one of two Lightsheer laser hand pieces depending on your hair and skin type. The High-Speed (HS) hand piece has a large spot size, perfect for treating larger areas faster, such as our legs! This hand piece uses a gentle suction, drawing skin upwards into it, bringing the hair follicle closer to the laser as the skin surface as it becomes slightly stretched. Then, the sensory receptors in the vacuum work to reduce any feelings of pain during the treatment, ensuring that the process is comfortable. Sounds good to us!

The other hand piece used is called the ET. Nope, it has no relevance to the character! This hand piece keeps your skin cool as the laser energy is applied to the target area. With a sapphire ChillTip spot size of 9mm x 9mm, it is designed to treat small areas that require maximum precision. Think along the lines of the lip and chin area. When the ET hand piece is pressed down, the skin is compressed so that blood flow is constricted. This means that the laser’s energy can be better absorbed by the hair follicle, resulting in effective treatment.

Does it hurt?
Depending on which hand piece is used, most people feel the warmth and strong suction with HS and a light ‘flick’ with the ET hand piece.

Is Lightsheer hair removal a permanent solution to hair removal?
We have found that most patients will reach permanent hair reduction. Again, this will depend on your skin and hair type and we will always go through a consultation with you before starting the treatment. You may need to pop by for maintenance treatments to maintain the hair reduction and we will be able to assess this during your treatments.

Who can get this laser treatment?
Something that we love about the Lightsheer laser hair removal is that it’s suitable for ALL skin types! Because we can customise how the treatment is delivered, we can work on a unique treatment just for you.

Is Lightsheer laser hair removal better than shaving or waxing?
Laser hair removal is a permanent solution to reducing hair growth. It removes or reduces hair growth in an area of your choice, meaning that you don’t need to keep using razors, creams or epilators, yay!

If you’re shaving or waxing, you’re most likely doing it either daily, weekly or monthly for the amount of time that you want to be hair free. This means remembering to do it at the best of times. After a course of Lightsheer laser hair removal, you may only need annual maintenance treatments, yes, please! This will vary from person to person, but we can agree that it’s definitely less maintenance than shaving, waxing or forms of IPL.

How many sessions will I need and how long do the results last?
To work out the number of treatments is required, it begins with understanding the growth cycle of your hair. The hair growth cycle consists of three distinct stages – anagen, catagen and telogen.

The anagen phase is the hair’s growth stage. In fast-growing areas of hair such as the underarms, legs, bikini this can be around six to eight weeks. At the end of the anagen phase, your hair enters the catagen phase lasting approximately 10 days. Lastly, we go into the telogen phase, a resting phase when your hair is released and falls out.

Each hair follicle is independent and goes through the growth cycle at different times. This is why our hair doesn’t fall out all at once! When getting the Lightsheer hair removal, your hair may be in any one of three life cycle stages. We will need to repeat the treatment every six to 10 weeks (depending on the area of your body) to target hair that is still in the anagen or first stage of growth.

How long does a Lightsheer laser hair removal appointment take?
Your first appointment will include a thorough assessment of your skin type, how sun exposure affects your skin and the types of hair removal procedures you’ve had previously. Your hair type, colour, hair growth, risks, side effects and post care advice will also be discussed as these are unique to you. Appointment times can vary from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of areas to be treated.

Who performs the Lightsheer laser hair removal treatment?
WA requires licencing of all lasers and strict training of laser operators. To be a laser operator, you must attend a Laser Safety course and undergo a minimum of 25 supervised hours of laser hair removal.

Operators must have a comprehensive understanding of laser physics, safety and risks. In WA, lasers can only be operated by a Medical Doctor or Registered nurse. This is something to consider when looking at laser options, you want to make sure you’re selecting a clinic like Ocean Cosmetics that undergoes the correct training with staff.

IPL can be performed by any beauty therapist without a comprehensive understanding of laser physics. They have onsite training for treatments, but they do not have a regulatory body and do not require certification of knowledge. As this can be dangerous to your body, we always recommend doing your research and selecting a qualified clinic before going ahead with any treatments.

If you want to make the most of the months before summer arrives, chat to us and book in for a no-obligation consultation to see what Lightsheer hair removal can do for you.
